TEMPERANCE DESCRIPTION
Combining Fire and Water symbols as well as male and female aspects of deity, the Temperance Tarot represents the act of tempering, from which it receives its name. In this process, heated metal is immersed in water to harden or soften it.
The angel Gabriel combines Water, Fire, and deity in the same figure on the Temperance Tarot card. Because polar opposites are being merged under divine guidance, the Temperance Tarot card also symbolizes healing and inspiration.
The solar disk on his brow represents divine fire and the upright triangle on his breast, elemental fire. The triangle’s orange colour points to its solar origin, while the azure of the robe, associated with the planet Jupiter, symbolizes divine mercy on the Temperance Tarot.
Shown on the Temperance Tarot card with one foot in the water and one on dry land, he bridges the subconscious, intuitive mind with the higher self.
The angel has opened his channel to higher knowledge and this allows him to do the seemingly impossible. For example, he can pour fluid from one cup to another on the Temperance Tarot card at such an odd angle without spilling a drop. Cups not only represent the Element of Water, but also the feminine aspect of creation, the divine womb.
On the right side of the Temperance card is a field of Irises, symbolizing the divine mind reaching out to humanity. On the left, an unobstructed path gently slopes towards a pass in the mountain range on the horizon. It leads straight back to the divine consciousness. Rather than being balanced against one another, the Temperance Tarot merges polar opposites.

General: Although in general, all your relationships are likely to be going quite well, you may need to look at your deeper personal issues and see if or how these are standing in your way. And if they are, how to work through them and integrate them. The idea now is to do what it takes to find balance, in yourself, in your relationships, and with your goals and aspirations.
Work: Aim high, but don't have expectations of yourself or others that you or they can't possibly meet. Do your work with patience and with stamina and it will pay off for you in the long run. Your accomplishments will not be overlooked.
Love: Often, before you can really have peace and wisdom in your relationships, you need to have peace within yourself. Look at what you feel guilty about, mistakes that you feel you've made in your past. Then forgive yourself and let them go. It's the only way you can truly make progress.
Finances: There is likely to be a good balance between what is going out and what is coming in. However, if you need to increase or collect your earnings, you are going to have to ask for what you deserve. Have courage and pride and you will not fail.
Health: Balance and moderation is the key. Are you eating well, sleeping well, playing and working enough, getting enough exercise? Look at where you might be out of balance and then remedy this. Moderation is definitely the way to good health right now.

REVERSED TEMPERANCE
You have been paying so much attention to everything and everyone around you that you have neglected yourself almost to the point of abuse. You have ignored your own wants and needs.
As in the upright meaning, reversed Temperance is a card about balance and relationships of all kinds. Friendships, family, romantic partnerships, and work partnerships all need your particular attention and nourishment when you see this card. In reversal, we are encouraged even more strongly to experiment in various areas in our lives. General: Even when reversed, all your relationships are likely to be going quite well, generally speaking. You may have been receiving some constructive criticism which actually could be quite helpful to you. Look at your deeper personal “issues” and see if or how these are standing in your way - and if they are, how to work through them and integrate them. Work: Especially when this card appears in reversal, this is not a time to be a lone wolf. You need to be seen as a team player and you need to work well with others, even if your work is almost without exception performed as an individual. No matter what things look like on the surface now, know that your accomplishments will not be overlooked. Love: When Temperance appears reversed, it is important to look at how you – and your relationships – are or are not in balance. It’s a good time to consider what others are bringing to your life and vice versa. If you are looking for love and Temperance reversed appears, you may well be trying too hard and thus alienating people. |
Finances: When Temperance is reversed, there is still most likely to be a good balance between what is going out and what is coming in money-wise. However, you must not simply sit back and expect the world to suddenly pay you what you are worth and what you deserve. Have the courage to ask for what you need and your money flow will increase.
Health: Even reversed, this card reminds us that balance and moderation are key to a healthy, fulfilling life. We must consider whether we are eating well, sleeping well, playing and working enough, and/or getting enough exercise. If you have health challenges when this card appears, something almost certainly is out of balance in these areas. It’s time to consider what this might be and make a change.
